• How Technology Is Supporting SEND Learning

In today’s rapidly evolving educational landscape, few innovations hold as much promise as artificial intelligence (AI). For students with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND), AI is more than a technological trend, it’s a powerful enabler of accessibility, personalised support, and meaningful inclusion.

At Aura Education, we believe technology should serve every learner. As AI tools become more sophisticated, they’re unlocking new ways to tailor learning experiences, reduce barriers, and empower educators to meet diverse needs with precision and empathy.

AI’s ability to adapt in real time is transforming how we support SEND learners. Intelligent tutoring systems and adaptive platforms can adjust content difficulty based on individual responses, deliver multimodal instruction (visual, auditory, and kinesthetic), to suit varied learning styles, and provide instant feedback that helps students build confidence and excel. For neurodiverse learners or those with cognitive processing challenges, this responsiveness can be the difference between disengagement and progress.

AI-powered speech-to-text and text-to-speech tools are revolutionising how students communicate. For learners with speech impairments, dyslexia, or motor challenges, these technologies offer voice-enabled writing support, real-time transcription of classroom discussions, and augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) tools that foster independence. These aren’t just technical solutions, they’re bridges to self-expression, peer interaction, and academic participation.

AI is also making strides in recognising and responding to emotional cues. Emerging tools can monitor engagement and emotional states via facial recognition or biometric feedback (with appropriate safeguarding), alert educators to signs of distress or disengagement, and recommend calming strategies or interventions tailored to individual profiles. Used ethically and transparently, these tools offer promising support for students with behavioural or emotional regulation needs.

As we embrace AI, we must also interrogate it. Bias in algorithms, data privacy, and equitable access are critical concerns. At Aura, we advocate for transparent use of AI tools, with clear consent and safeguarding protocols, as well as inclusive design that reflects the diversity of SEND learners, and ongoing collaboration between educators, technologists, and families. Technology should never replace human connection, but when used thoughtfully, it can amplify it.

At Aura Education, we’re excited to explore these possibilities, always grounded in empathy, ethics, and evidence.
